404 Error Page uses menu items for custom Joomla errors

404 Error Page replaces Joomla’s standard 404 presentation with content supplied through a selected menu item while keeping the missing URL and 404 response.

The job is to show a prepared Joomla page when a visitor requests a URL that does not exist, without redirecting that visitor elsewhere.

Missing URLs are unavoidable on sites that rename articles, remove content, change menu structures or receive stale links from search engines. Joomla already detects the error, returns a 404 response and displays the template’s error view. A site team can usually alter that presentation with an error.php template override, or settle for the default page. An extension becomes useful when the 404 content should be managed like ordinary site content rather than coded into the template.

According to the listing, 404 Error Page goes beyond that basic core-and-template arrangement by letting an administrator select a menu item as the error page, assign different menu items to published site languages, and handle errors raised during component execution. It also claims to preserve the original path and HTTP 404 status, avoid caching the error response, remove the canonical link from the error page and preserve Joomla redirects. Those are listing claims, not results verified by JoomClub.

This is aimed at multilingual sites, content teams and administrators who want an editable “page not found” experience with site navigation, recovery links or language-specific text. A small site that rarely changes URLs, accepts Joomla’s default error page or already has a suitable template override has little reason to install it.

The listing identifies it as a free system plugin from joomla.center in the Directory’s error pages section, under the GPLv2 or later licence. The developer has 15 other directory listings, while this extension has no reviews. Before installing, check the stated J5 and J6 compatibility against the exact site setup, and test interactions with the template, multilingual routing, caching, redirects and SEO extensions. The listing does not establish how those combinations behave, or provide independent testing results.
