A block-and-Markdown alternative to Joomla’s TinyMCE
Markus Editor is a free Joomla editor that lets authors build articles from movable content blocks and use Markdown alongside HTML.
The job is to replace Joomla’s conventional rich-text editing workflow with a block-based authoring interface while saving the result as HTML.
This comes up because Joomla’s core editor is primarily a text-and-toolbar experience. TinyMCE can handle headings, lists, links, images, tables, source HTML and Joomla’s editor buttons, but it does not provide a native block canvas or Markdown-first workflow. A template override changes how saved content is displayed, not how editors assemble it. Sites that need blocks therefore usually install an extension rather than modify the template. According to the listing, Markus goes beyond core with movable blocks, Markdown conversion and file handling, an article outline and reading-time display, accessibility warnings, Bootstrap columns, and blocks for modules, buttons and free HTML. It also claims that content it cannot edit remains untouched and can still be read by TinyMCE.
Its likely audience is a publishing team that wants structured article composition, cleaner pasting from office tools, or a Markdown-friendly workflow without abandoning Joomla’s existing editor buttons. A small site with occasional authors, standard TinyMCE content, or no need for block layouts has little reason to add it.
Before installing, note that the listing marks it as free and lists POUSSIN Cyrille as the developer. The directory shows three other extensions from that developer, but Markus Editor has no reviews there. The listing says Joomla 6.2 and PHP 8.3 are minimum requirements; it does not explain migration edge cases, update policy, support arrangements, or how every third-party editor plugin behaves. LanguageTool’s external-service privacy implications and the practical limits of its Bootstrap-template claim also merit checking.
