Google Summer of Code (GSoC) is a Google programme in which participants write code for open-source organisations under the guidance of experienced mentors. Joomla has taken part before and will return to the programme in 2026. The organisation has published a list of project ideas for prospective contributors.
Four proposed projects
- Ajax backend: The project would enable administrative actions without page reloads, add automatic saving while content is being edited, and provide expanded filtering for searching and filtering custom fields.
- Workflow and task scheduler automation: Joomla’s workflow and task scheduler features would be combined so assigned workflows can execute transitions automatically at precisely defined times. The proposal includes recurring and directly scheduled workflows, an interface designed around usability and current accessibility standards, and controls for managing workflows and schedules on category and article pages. Third-party components are also expected to be able to use the functionality.
- Multiple categories: Joomla currently does not allow a single item to be assigned to several categories. Although tags are often used as a workaround, the project would add native multi-category support.
- Reinforcement learning from translator feedback: Joomla plans to use automated translation for its documentation. Translator feedback would be used to train language models continually, improving translation quality and preserving Joomla-specific terminology in each language.
