KAutoImageZoom opens oversized article images in a popup

KAutoImageZoom turns sufficiently large local images in Joomla articles into clickable full-resolution popups.

This need arises because Joomla’s core lets editors insert images into articles and control their displayed dimensions, but it does not automatically compare those dimensions with the original file and add a lightbox to qualifying images. A site can handle the presentation with a template override and its own JavaScript, or use an existing lightbox/gallery extension. KAutoImageZoom goes beyond core by checking the uploaded image’s real width, applying a threshold, and providing its own popup without an external JavaScript library. According to the listing, it can also use the image’s alt text as a caption and is enabled for article views by default, with other content views available as options.

It is aimed at editorial sites where authors routinely place large photographs or diagrams in ordinary articles, but do not want to add shortcodes or build a gallery workflow. It is less relevant to sites whose images are already handled by a template, page builder, gallery component or established lightbox, and it does not target remote images: the listing says local images only and excludes SVG files.

Before installing, note that it is a free download from Luca in the Images section, with stated requirements of Joomla 5.x or 6.x and PHP 8.1+. The directory lists six other extensions from the developer, but KAutoImageZoom has no reviews. The listing does not explain how it interacts with other lightboxes, dynamically loaded article content or aggressive image optimisation, so those cases should be checked on a staging site. Confirm its popup styling and accessibility behaviour against the site’s template before deployment.
